I'm not sure if Overdrive has always had the option to turn off automatic file downloading, but I had a patron who ran afoul of it and it caused him a lot of grief.
He had checked out two books. Overdrive gave the standard "A book has been added to your bookshelf" message. However, when going to the bookshelf, the image of the book was there, but the file would not download. When tapping on the book, Overdrive gave a message that said: "Files have not been downloaded yet." It was almost as if the device could not access wifi.
Overdrive has apparently added the option to not have the app automatically download files. Perhaps this option has always been there, but I was not previously aware of it. To find the option, please click on the Overdrive icon (or the three lines) in the upper left corner of the app. The screen will slide to show the standard options--Add a Library, Bookshelf, etc. One of these options is called "Files," and has an image of a downward pointing arrow beside it.
If you click on files, it will show you all the files that are downloaded or pending. At the top, you'll notice the same downward pointing arrow. If the arrow is lit up in blue, it means that automatic downloads are on. If the arrow is grayed out, it means auto downloading is off and the file is simply not going to download until you tap on the arrow and switch downloading to on.
I don't know how my patron accidentally turned his auto downloading off, or if it was just a glitch, etc. But please keep this option in mind if you have a device that's not downloading Overdrive files for no discernible reason.
My patron's device was an iPad, but this option appears to be a feature of the current app across all operating systems.
