Hi everyone,
When patrons download the 3M app, or install the PC/Mac reader on their computer, they're asked for three things:
1) the state they're in 2) the library they're using 3) a user name
It's assumed the user name is supposed to be the patron's JCPL library card number. No other password is required.
However, due to a glitch, patrons have been able to put in any user name they want--even a string of gibberish--and they're still given access to our 3M books. They can download and read the books just fine. The only thing is, those titles will not show up under their library card number when they log into their account online.
I've experimented and it seems to be only an issue for JCPL. At the moment, it seems that if someone in Alaska happened to stumble upon our 3M access point, they could log in and start using our stuff without ever needing a card. This presents obvious problems.
I've reported the issue to the Digital Experience Team, since I know of no other liaison for our vendors after both Cindy and Stacy left. The main thing for people to know right now is that if patrons ask why 3M books they know they've got checked out or on hold aren't showing in their library account, you should check to make sure their user name is actually their library card number.
