The issue is that some Nooks come "pre-authorized". This creates a problem when the user wants to check out library books and needs to create a new ADE account to authorize the nook through ADE. They have to first delete the factory "authorization" in order to get the library authorization to work.
From website (http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-Book-Discussion/User-Not-Authorized-error-on-nook-when-trying-to-view-library/td-p/746946): I was getting the 'User not authorised' message after I had linked the Nook up to the ADE software and thought I had authorised it. No such luck. After looking around the ADE software for a way of re-authorising the device I found the solution. Using the Nook as a USB device find the folder '.adobe-digital-editions' It contains one small XML file, which if you open contains the data about the machine. DELETE the folder completely including the content (1 file). Unplug the Nook. Then bring up ADE, plug in the nook. It will then recoginise the Nook and ask you to authorise! Agree and it work correctly for me. This time perfect - the EPUB DRM books open a treat and the Nook is now recognised. Whats the difference I don't know but it certainly worked for me. It would be easier if Adobe established a de-authorise and re-authorise function in ADE. Until then the above worked for me and now I will be keeping my Nook!

Hi Arra,
I can't test to see if the procedure has changed, but ADE did have a prior method of de-authorizing a Nook. Once it was plugged in and with ADE open, users could hit Control-Shift-D and a message would pop up asking if the user wanted to deauthorize the Nook. For Mac users, it was either Command - Shift - D or Command - Shift - E (one of the two). I'd love to know if this procedure no longer works.

I wonder if this is for the newest Nook HD tablets or for all new Nooks in general. If anyone is noticing a trend of they types of Nooks, please share this. It is with the tablets or Nook colors then those are not needing to be plugged in anymore and it is advisable for the patrons to just download the Overdrive and 3M app instead. This would take care of that, again, if it is the tablet Nooks.
